Get ready for Lunar New Year with an action-packed World Movies Ultra Violence special. Tune in to the Australian TV premieres of two brand new Asian movies, exploding with action and comedy, including Korean noir-action, Gangnam Blues and Chinese action-comedy, Chongqing Hot Pot.
Saturday 28 January 6.10pm
It’s the 1970’s in South Korea and Gangnam, in southern Seoul, is quickly developing. When the homes of two childhood friends are demolished by local thugs, their friendship is tested as they turn to the mafia underworld for fast cash. The pair quickly become entangled in the collusion and battles between political powers and criminal organisations that mirrors the dark history behind Seoul’s now most affluent district.
“There are no thrilling action sequences, only unrefined fist-fighting; no thugs with hidden hearts of gold, only ruthless, savage self-interest. All groups, in the end, are fighting for their own in a world that allows no room for humanity or morals. Whereas brotherly love and family ties would triumph in your more optimistic plot, in Yoo’s view of society, these values are trampled like bulldozed land.”- The Korea Herald
“It is a story about people who are used, then discarded…about lives that are, like the buildings they live in, unauthorized.”- Director Yoo Ha, The Korea Herald
Chongqing Hot Pot
Sunday 29 January 8.30pm
Chongqing Hot Pot is a Chinese action-comedy that follows three friends’ journeys. After opening a hot pot restaurant in a former bomb shelter in Chong Qing, the friends, Liu Bo (Chen Kun), Xu Dong (Qin Hao) and Four Eyes (Yu Entai), discover their restaurant is connected to a bank vault next door, loaded with money. Deciding whether or not to go to the police, they find out that one of the bank’s employees is a former classmate, and look to enlist her in deciding their future.
“The central Chinese city of Chongqing is famous for hot pot, WWII bomb shelters, and gangsters. Chongqing Hot Pot combines all three into a screwball caper movie with heavy local flavor.” – Cinema Escapist
