Our World Movies programmer has a pretty tough gig. She’s taken some time off from planning your daily international film fix, to visit the SXSW Film Festival in Austin and check out the hottest new films from around the world.
Check out Shannon’s highlights from the first two days of the trip – and stay tuned for more!
Greetings from a very wet Austin! I just got caught in the pouring rain for 45 mins, it’s 4am but I am LOVING Austin and SXSW. The town is buzzing!
It’s the 20 year anniversary of the festival so there is a big emphasis on film.
There has been months of hype for this film and I was very excited to see it since I read the first reviews from Sundance in January. It’s Shane Carruth’s second feature after the enigmatic cult favourite Primer, and again he wrote, directed, starred, edited, did all the sound – basically everything! It’s very difficult to describe the plot – which focuses on a man and a woman who meet after both being abducted by eco-terrorists. The film was as strange as it was compelling.
It was a thrill to see Richard Linklater introduce the film, and he stayed around for a great Q&A afterwards. I had to line up for over an hour, but it was well worth the wait – I loved this film as much as the last two in the trilogy. This has been a real highlight for me so far.
I didn’t get to see this as it premiered on the first night, but everyone has been talking about it. Apparently it’s a great remake of the Sam Raimi original.
Fuck For Forest
I would love to get this for WM Adult – German hippies raise money to save the environment by having sex or taking naked photographs and posting them online. Definitely R rated but lots of fun!
There are Q&As with Matthew McConaughey and Joseph Gordon-Levitt coming up on the next few days… Who wouldn’t be excited about that?
Will be back with more news when I next get a second!
