Some cartoons aren’t meant for kids. World Movies celebrates the best animation from around the world in this month-long special.
Tune in for Sweden’s ‚ÄòMetropia’ featuring the voices of Alexander Skarsgård and Juliette Lewis, followed the next week by the Oscar nominated French-Iranian film ‚ÄòPersepolis’ starring Catherine Deneuve.
Samuel L. Jackson and Lucy Liu lend their voices to ‚ÄòAfro Samurai: Resurrection’ as we present an acclaimed animated film every week, all with distinct styles and wildly different stories to tell.
Metropia (Sweden, 2009) – Friday 6 July 8.30pm
A futuristic look at a terrifying Europe where the world is running out of oil. A gigantic underground network is created by joining all the various undergrounds together underneath Europe. Living in Stockholm, Roger avoids the underground because he finds it disturbing. Sometimes when he is too near the underground, he hears a strange voice in his head. One day Roger stumbles upon the truth that his life is controlled in every detail. In order to break free he combines forces with super-model Nina.
Persepolis (France, 2007) – Friday 13 July 8.30pm
This Oscar-nominated film follows a young girl’s coming-of-age against the backdrop of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Through the eyes of the precocious and outspoken Marjane we see a people’s hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power – forcing the veil upon women and imprisoning thousands. She outsmarts the ‚Äòsocial guardians’ and as she grows up she discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden – all forbidden under the new regime. However she fully realises the horrors of her new life when her uncle is senselessly executed and bombs begin to fall around her house.
Afro Samurai: Resurrection (Japan, USA, 2009) – Friday 20 July 8.30pm
Afro Samurai has avenged the death of his father and found a life of peace. But the legendary martial arts master is forced back into the game when his father’s body is stolen from the cemetery by a band of enemies. Leading his enemies is the beautiful yet sadistic Sio, a woman determined to make Afro Samurai pay for the things he did when seeking revenge for his father.

While competing in the Tour de France a young cyclist is kidnapped by the French Mafia. His grandmother and mentor set out to rescue him with the help of a jazz trio whose main diet is frogs.
