As the film industry goes from strength to strength, the growing list of film festivals and awards ceremonies is becoming overwhelming for movie buffs looking for their next great recommendation. Here is a list of the film festivals and awards for international film we look forward to each year.
5. Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards
Sonny Bono launched this festival in 1990 in an effort to extend the truncated tourist season in Palm Springs, USA, saying “I feel certain that this annual event will continue to prosper, grow and take its place among the most significant international film festivals, marking another milestone in the cultural life, progress and prestige of our city.”
Since then, the festival has not only put Palm Springs on the map, but has also launched world and US premieres for filmmakers such as Luc Besson, Steven Soderbergh, Mike Newell and many more.
4. Golden Globe Awards
The prestigious Golden Globes have been awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since 1943 and with the ceremony now broadcast in 167 countries across the world it has become an incredibly significant element of the film industry.
3. BAFTA Awards
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts was founded in 1947 and is proud to acknowledge the huge changes in the industry since the early days. When television became a mass medium, the academy embraced it, and today they acknowledge the immense creativity and skill involved in game design.
2. Academy Awards
Say what you want about the Academy, an Oscar is still one of the most prestigious and most coveted awards in the industry, garnering the attention of hundreds of millions of film fans and having the potential to launch otherwise unheard-of names into the movie stratosphere.
1. The Palme d’Or – Cannes International Film Festival
The Palme d’Or was introduced in 1955 as the highest prize of the Cannes International Film Festival. The prize is given to the director of the best feature film of the year and is so exclusive the winning film is forbidden from being awarded any additional awards at the festival.
