In 1937, the Chinese capital city of Nanking was laid siege by the Japanese Army. In this double feature, World Movies tributes the victims of the war with two feature films which tell the darkness of this appalling tragedy.
At 8.30pm the Australian television premiere of City Of War: The Story Of John Rabe tells the story of a German businessman living in the city. As bombings begin to rage and the Imperial Army (supported by Nazi Germany) storm the region, he bravely defies his motherland to protect his loyal Chinese workers. In the tradition of Schindler’s list, this true story finds humans triumphant amidst the mounting invasion.
Then at 10.30pm The City of Life and Death from arthouse Chinese Director Chuan Lu tells the story of the soldiers of the tragedy, with chilling dramatisations of the battle and the slaughter of 300,000 citizens.
