This at once heart-breaking and life-affirming drama by director Julian Schnabel relates the true story of French magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric).
After suffering a stroke, Julian wakes in hospital to the harrowing discovery that he is almost completely paralysed. He does, however, have use of his left eye, and learns to communicate through blinking. He manages to dictate an entire memoir in this fashion, in which we are privy to his humorously scathing opinions of the doctors and nurses who buzz around him, his imagined adventures in worlds unknown and the psychological torture of being trapped inside his own body.
