These are the movies that inspired the Hollywood remakes. International cinema is filled with refreshingly original ideas. The depth, the drama and the story is often lost in translation – decide for yourself if the originals really are the best.

LOL (2008, France)

Miley Cyrus is set to play the lead in the Hollywood remake of this French teen rom-com. In the original, Lola (Christa Theret) is a typical Parisian 15-year-old girl living with her single mum, Anne (Sophie Marceau). When her boyfriend returns from his summer holiday with news of his unfaithfulness, Lola puts on a tough act and kicks him to the curb, claiming her own summer romance.

Brothers (2004, Denmark)

An army Major leaves his family to fight in Afghanistan, however when news of his capture reaches home his family struggle with grief. Winner of UCMF Film Music Award at 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

The Last Kiss (2001, Italy)

Let the Right One In (2008, Sweden)

12 year old Oskar is bullied at school and lives a lonely existence at home with his mother. Then he befriends a 12 year old girl, Eli, who just happens to be a vampire.
