Director Mathieu Amalric, best known for his leading parts in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Quantum of Solace won both the Cannes FIPRESCI Award, (the festival’s main prize from film critics), and Best Director Award for this hilarious French comedy.
In a self-referential twist, it stars Amalric himself in a telling and fascinating self-portrait as a hapless entrepreneur and washed-up family man. He plays a producer who brings an American neo-burlesque troupe to France, played by real-life performers Mimi Le Meaux and Kitten on the Keys.
What ensues is a road movie which shows a side of France we rarely get to see on screen: a limbo-land of trading estates, petrol stations and chain hotels. Nonetheless, it’s the characters who bring tonnes of heart and soul, making this a lively, witty yet melancholic journey.
