The year is 1954 and Soviet communism is at the peak of its strength in director Valery Todorovsky’s musical period piece. The film centres around Mels (Anton Shagin), a straight-laced young communist who risks expulsion from the party when he falls for gorgeous Polza (Oksana Akinshina).
Polza is a member of the ‚Äòstilyagi’ – an actual youth movement of the time in which Russian teens adopted American rockabilly and jazz sub-cultures. Her relationship with Mels becomes increasingly complicated as a growing list of her rebellious friends are arrested or forced to flee the country by the oppressive Communist regime, forcing Mels to choose between his heart and his head.
