The Room is almost as famous for its audience participation experience as it is for being notoriously bad . Usually performed at special screenings in theatres, we give you the run down on what you’ll need and what you’ll need to do so you can recreate the experience in your lounge room tonight.
What you need:
- Plastic spoons
- A football (perhaps a soft plushy football would work best for your lounge room)
What to do:
Cue: When the camera is out of focus (which is quite a lot)
Cue: When Denny arrives or leaves
Shout: “Hi, Denny!” or “Bye, Denny!”
Cue: When there’s a wide angle shot of the Golden Gate Bridge, panning left or right
Shout: “Go! Go! Go! Go!” When the pan reaches the other side, cheer! If it cuts off early before making it to the other side, boo!
Cue: Whenever Lisa’s mother (Claudette) touches Lisa’s nose
Shout: “Cancer!” or “I put my evil inside you!”
Cue: When there’s a shot of the San Francisco landscape
Shout: “Meanwhile, back in San Fransisco!”
Cue: Whenever you see artwork/ a picture of a spoon
Action: Yell “Spoon!” then hurl a plastic spoon toward the screen
Cue: Whenever the guys are “playing football”
Action: Throw the football around with fellow viewers and only stop throwing around once they do
Cue: During sex scenes
Action: Clap to the music
Cue: When Johnny bellows, ‚ÄúYou’re tearing me apart, Lisa!‚Äù…
Action: Shout the famous line back “You’re tearing him apart, Lisa!‚Äù
The above list is far from exhaustive. There are plenty of other times where one can call out flubs, continuity errors, etc., and by all means do so. The more participation, the better the experience is.
