Heartwarming doesn’t begin to describe the bold new film The Rocket. This gripping and deeply personal story received the Audience Award at this year’s Sydney Film Festival and was also awarded at the Tribeca Festival and Berlin International Film Festival.

Set in Laos the film follows 10-year-old Ahlo who is considered a curse by his Laotian tribe. When a series of events – including mass dislocation and death – suddenly take place, Ahlo is ostracised by his community and sets out to prove he is not bad luck with the creation of a rocket.

Set against the backdrop of a war-ravaged country on the brink of huge change, this tale of a boy who has the odds stacked against him is in the vein of the Oscar winning Salaam Bombay, Central Station, The Motorcycle Diaries and Slumdog Millionaire – with a touch of Little Miss Sunshine.

The Rocket opens nationally on Thursday 29 August, and to celebrate we are giving away 20 in-season double passes worth $37 to use at participating cinemas.
